Renting a Bike in Pattaya Without a License: 2026 Rules and Fines

Pattaya is a resort best explored on two wheels. But many tourists ask: can you rent a bike without a license, and what are the risks? Here are the rules in force in 2026.

What license you need in Thailand

To ride legally, a tourist needs two documents at once: a national driving license with an open «A» (motorcycle) category and an International Driving Permit (IDP). An important detail: Thai authorities recognize international permits only for the first 30 days after entry — beyond that a local license is formally required. Without an open «A» category, riding a scooter is a violation even with an IDP covering other categories.

Can you ride without a license?

Formally — no, it's a traffic violation. In practice rental companies hand over bikes against a passport, but responsibility for riding unlicensed lies entirely with the rider: if stopped by police, the fine is 1,000 baht, and it has nothing to do with the rental company.

Police checkpoints in Pattaya

Fixed police checkpoints operate regularly in the tourist zones — Beach Road, Second Road, Central Pattaya, the roads to Jomtien and Naklua. Checks are most active in the evening and at night: besides documents, riders are breath-tested. Stay calm during a check, don't argue and never offer a bribe — that is a separate criminal offence.

Traffic fines in 2026

  • Riding without a helmet — up to 2,000 baht;
  • Riding without a driving license — 1,000 baht;
  • Running a red light — 1,000 baht;
  • Parking in a prohibited spot — 500 baht plus a wheel clamp;
  • Drunk driving — from 10,000 baht, arrest and deportation possible;
  • Repeat drunk driving within two years — up to 2 years in prison and a 50,000–100,000 baht fine.

Recommendations

  • Get your «A» category and an IDP at home — cheaper than any fine and required for insurance to work;
  • Always wear a helmet — rider and passenger alike;
  • Carry copies of your passport and license;
  • Beginners should pick light models — Honda Click 125 or Scoopy 110.
