Renting a Motorbike in Pattaya Without a License: What You Need to Know
A common traveller question: can you rent a motorbike in Pattaya without a license? Short answer: with us, yes — we don't require a driving licence to rent. But «renting» and «riding legally» aren't the same thing. Here's the honest version.
Renting without a license — yes, with us

What Thai law says
To ride a motorbike legally in Thailand you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with category «A» (motorcycle) open, or a Thai licence. A car category «B» isn't enough. Pattaya police check documents at occasional checkpoints (including on Second Rd and the Jomtien exits); the fine for lacking the right licence is usually around 500฿.
Why it's worth getting the licence
- Checkpoint fines are small but repeat;
- The big one is insurance: in an accident without a valid licence of the right category, the insurer may refuse;
- With a licence you ride relaxed.
Adding category «A» to an IDP at home takes 15 minutes. Missed it? You can get a Thai licence in Pattaya (a medical certificate and a simple test).

- Don't speed on Beach Rd and Second Rd — traffic is heavy;

- In a downpour, wait it out — the road gets slippery.
